College men’s volleyball: ‘Eaters lose to Bruins in five

WESTWOOD - The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team, ranked 10th in the

nation, answered a 2-0 deficit in games, but lost in five, 30-20, 30-22,

29-31, 28-30, 15-11, to top-ranked UCLA Friday night at Pauley Pavilion,

in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action.

Erick Helinihi amassed a match-high 24 kills to lead the Anteaters

(11-12, 5-11 in the MPSF), while Jimmy Pelzel slammed 15 kills and

Jarrett Jensen had 14. UCI setter David Kniffin contributed 42 assists

and Jensen added 27. Pelzel went low for 11 digs and teammate Monte

Tucker posted 13 digs.

UCLA (21-3, 14-2) was led by Matt Komer (21 kills) and Rich Nelson (63

assists).
