Prep softball: Newport loses first game
GARDEN GROVE - The Newport Harbor High softball team, which is off
to its best start in six years, lost its first game of the season in the
Garden Grove Tournament Saturday at Lake Elementary School.
The Sailors (8-1) opened the day of pool play with a 7-0 victory over
Calvary Chapel (4-3). Newport junior pitcher Kim Moore improved to 5-0
after recording seven strikeouts, while allowing just one hit in five
innings. In addition, Moore was perfect at the plate, going 2 for 2.
Freshman Ashley Gleason went 3 for 4, including a double and four RBIs.
Junior catcher Amanda Campbell and freshman Julianne Bass had two hits
each.
Workman (3-3) received two unearned runs and defeated Newport in the
second game, 2-0. The Sailors left seven runners stranded on base.
“That was our big problem today,” Newport assistant coach Lawana
Wright said.
The Garden Grove Tournament resumes Saturday. The Sailors return to
nonleague action Tuesday at 3:15 p.m., facing Newport-Mesa District rival
Costa Mesa at TeWinkle Park.
