Rowing: NAC women victorious

Varsity and novice women representing the Newport Aquatic Center

had success at two separate regattas March 9-10.

Racing at Redwood Shores in Belmont, a pair of varsity women’s eights

each won two races.

The boat of Kate Mead, Lindsey Hurban, Esther Lofgren, Lauren May,

Devon McCalla, Lindsay Serrins, Hilary Ellis and Jean Geddes, coxed by

Lauren Lorman, was a double winner.

The combination of Natalie Ekker-Stacey, Lindsay Payne, Anne Kircher,

Michelle Fickling, Mitra Grubb, Lauren Berghell, Kirsten Contino and Sara

Wales, as well as coxswain Lauren Lyon also won twice, under the coaching

leadership of Christy Shaver.

The women’s varsity quad of Ellis, Kircher, Payne and Mead was first,

as was varsity four of Hurban, McCalla, May and Serrins, coxed by Lorman.

The junior varsity four of Fickling, Ekker-Stacey, Berghell and Wales,

coxed by Lyon, also topped its competition.

The NAC junior crew women traveled to Lake Merced for a novice regatta

hosted by St. Ignatius.

The women’s novice eight of coxswain Aly Raymer, Jessica Grubbs, Catie

Vogeding, Amanda Molinaro, Laurie Dabney, Jessica Stringfellow, Claire

McKay, Brindey Weber and Ashley Weber claimed a gold medal.

The bronze medal was captured by the NAC novice eight of Meredith

Irby, Katie Cole, Jessica Fritz, Corrine Turner, Tyler Murphy, Dana Hunt,

Annie Porteous and Jamie Horwitz, with coxswain Kristin Collins.

NAC swept the gold and silver medals in the novice four. Coxswain

Taylor Decker led the quartet of Murphy, Turner, Grubbs and Alie Traen to

victory. That group is coached by Alicia Cole.

Collins, Irby, Katie Cole and Hunt combined to earn the silver.

NAC will compete in the California Cup Regatta Saturday at the Long

Beach Marine Stadium.
