Costa Mesa National Little League: Yankees prevail

The Costa Mesa American Little League’s Minor A Yankees came on

strong to defeat the National League’s Astros, 7-0, in youth baseball

action.

Leading the offense for the Yankees were Chris Gute, Kevin Hoffman, Nick

Block, Robert Royster, Scott MacIntosh, Josh Bowman, Kyle Peterson, Joey

Blackwell and Austin Bagby.

Contributing on defense were Tyler Muzzy and Matt Mello. Bagby gave up

one hit to lead the team on the mound.

In Minor A action:

* Cardinals 13, Diamondbacks 8 - The Cardinals scored nine runs on six

hits in the fifth inning to pull ahead of the Diamondbacks. Sean Anderson

and Ryan Cherney had RBI triples while Kendra Fisher contributed with a

double and an RBI single during the rally. Also contributing in the fifth

were Tim Frydendal and Kylie Wilson, both with RBI singles, and Jordan

Young and Mark DeFrenza, both with runs scored.

Early runs from Angel Beas, Fisher, Frydendal and Wilson, as well as RBIs

from Andrew Roth kept the Cardinals in the game.

Anderson, a reliever, got the win after striking out three in the sixth

inning and posting a strike-out for the third out with the bases loaded

in the fifth.

* Dodgers 16, Marlins 6 (five innings, mercy) - Josh E. went 4 for 4 with

three runs scored while Luke had three hits and scored four runs. Billy

D., Daniel D., Eusubio and Chris scored twice. Preston and Chris scored

runs while Dodger pitchers Billy, Josh and Eusubio combined for 10

strikeouts.

In Farm Division action:

* The Rockies took on the Mets Saturday. Aaron Wood doubled and scored a

run while teammate Maliah Murtha pitched in with two hits for an RBI and

a run scored for the Rockies.

Adam Ward had a double and an RBI single for the Rockies while Nathan

Frank reached base twice. Contributing on offense for the Rockies were

Alex Mazur (one hit, run scored), Matthew Spicer (double, two RBIs),

Robert Murtha (RBI single, run scored), Hannah Jeyarajah (two hits, RBI,

run scored) and Jesse Paz (three hits, RBI, run scored).

Noah Jeyarajah took care of catching duties while Andrea Hardwick

contributed in the outfield. Erik Rasmussen played pitcher, catcher and

shortstop.

* The Reds battled the Pirates in a game that featured 13-ground rule

doubles for the Reds. Brian Burciaga led the way with four ground-rule

doubles in four at bats. Conrad Beach went 5 for 5 and Colin Moran, Jeff

Carlyle, Robert Sullivan and Eddie Bisoso each had four hits. Ben Beck

pitched in with three hits while Michael Quintana and Evan Santana each

had two. The Reds’ defense was led by outfielders Matt Thomas and Sean

Golden.

In the Majors Division:

* Diamondbacks 8, Marlins 1 - Riley Hart struck out five and gave up two

hits in four and two-thirds innings. He also contributed on offense with

three doubles and six RBIs. Brandon Maurer had two doubles, three RBIs

and closed out the game on the mound with two strikeouts. Max Friedmann

and Andrew Ayala had two crucial catches in the outfield while strong

defense was supplied by shortstop Ryan Redding, catcher Chase Harrison

and first baseman Joseph Dzida. Sean Ulrich’s base running also

contributed to the win. Ayala and Redding had singles in the win.

* Dodgers 10, Astros 8 - The Dodgers overcame an 8-2 deficit to pull out

a win. The Dodgers scored three runs in the fourth on three walks and

Nick Pedersen’s RBI single. In the fifth, the Dodgers scored three runs

on five walks. Juan Guzman hit a two-out RBI triple in the sixth to give

the Dodgers the lead for good. Brandon Grimmett had a double and three

runs scored while Brian Bennett and Alex Grosek also had hits. Cody

Green, Pedersen and Justin Long combined to strike out 13. Matthew Telles

was strong on defense, throwing out a runner from right field.
