Four repeat selections are among 14 Newport-Mesa boys and girls
soccer players named All-CIF Southern Section by coaches.
Newport Harbor High junior forward Amy Burlingham (Division I), as well
as Corona del Mar juniors Paige Janes and Lauren Shepherdson (Division
IV) are first-team honorees, after earning All-CIF recognition a year
ago.
CdM junior Elisha Morgan, a second-team honoree in Division IV, is
All-CIF for a third straight year.
Newport Harbor senior Tyson Wahl and Costa Mesa senior Eli Solis are
additional first-team picks in Division I and Division IV, respectively.
Senior Tory Manchester and freshman Erin Hardy represent Newport Harbor
on the Division II second team, while the Division IV second team
includes Costa Mesa junior Sharon Day, CdM junior Alivia Mazura, and the
aforementioned Morgan.
Costa Mesa senior Sarah Ronquillo, CdM junior Jenny Long, Costa Mesa
freshman Alfonso Pineda and Newport Harbor senior Kevin Campos are
third-team choices.
Shepherdson, who shared Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player honors
with Day, was the stopper for Coach Ron Evans’ Sea Kings. She was
third-team All-CIF and second-team All-PCL as a sophomore.
Burlingham, a Parade Magazine All-American, was the Sea View League
Player of the Year this season, helping the Sailors finish second and
advance to the CIF Division II quarterfinals. Burlingham, whose speed
sets her apart from her prep peers, was second-team All-CIF last season,
when she also earned first-team all-league recognition.
Janes was the sweeper for the three-time Pacific Coast League champions,
who advanced to the CIF Division IV semifinals for the third straight
time. She was third-team All-CIF as a junior. She has twice been
first-team All-PCL, after earning second-team all-league laurels as a
freshman.
Solis, also a forward, led the Mustangs to their second straight PCL
crown. He was a first-team all-league pick this season.
Wahl, who missed his junior season to train with the under-17 national
team in Florida, was second-team All-CIF as a sophomore. Bound for UC
Berkeley, he was a first-team all-league honoree, after earning
first-team laurels as a sophomore and second-team honors as a freshman.
Day, who led the Mustangs with 17 goals and added nine assists, receives
her first All-CIF recognition. She helped the Mustangs win the program’s
first CIF playoff game this season. She was first-team All-PCL as a
sophomore.
Mazura, a midfielder, was a first-team All-PCL performer this season.
Morgan, also a midfielder, was first-team All-CIF her first two varsity
seasons. Recovering from offseason knee surgery, which forced her to miss
much of the preleague season, Morgan has been a first-team all-league
honors the last three years.
Manchester, a midfielder for the Sailors, was a big reason behind the
recent resurgence of Coach Jason Sorrell’s squad. She was a first-team
All-Sea View choice this year, after earning second-team honors as a
junior.
Hardy, the Sailors’ extremely quick stopper, was a big reason the Tars
did not allow a goal the final seven of their eight league games and shut
out 13 opponents.
Campos, the Newport boys team’s sweeper, was a three-time All-Sea View
performer who led the Tars to second place in the rugged league wars this
year. His play also was pivotal in a first-round playoff win over Santa
Ana Valley.
Ronquillo blossomed this season as a forward, totaling 14 goals and nine
assists to help the Mustangs challenge CdM for the league title for a
second straight year. She was a first-team all-league pick this year.
Pineda, an explosive forward, was also a first-team All-PCL performer.
Long, another of the standout CdM midfielders, was a first-team All-PCL
performer this season, after earning second-team all-league recognition
as a sophomore.
