The UCLA Alumni Assn. and the UCLA Chancellor’s Associates have

announced the three co-chairs of their second annual Orange County Golf

Tournament set for April 29 at the Newport Beach Country Club. John

Horwitz, Karl Urland and Jeff Wine will co-chair the tournament. Proceeds

will benefit the UCLA Club of Orange County Scholarships and the UCLA

Fund. The day will feature 18 holes of golf, a silent auction and dinner.

Horwitz, who founded Horwitz, Gregoire, Goudy & Tse, received his

bachelor’s degree from UCLA and law degree from Santa Clara University.

He specializes in family law. Urland is chairman of the Orange County

Chancellor’s Associates, is a UCLA graduate and earned his juris

doctorate from USC. He owns his own law practice, specializing in real

estate and construction. Wine is owner and president of Vino Lugo’s,

which has been running golf tournaments for 15 years. Both the UCLA Club

and the Chancellor’s Associates support UCLA students. The club raises

money for merit-based scholarships while the Chancellor’s Associates

raises funds for academic programs deemed critical by the chancellor. . .

. Two Costa Mesa workers were recently honored for their contributions to

county community organizations. Jake Harle of Harle, Janics & Kannen in

Costa Mesa and Janet Cook of PCW Contracting Services in Costa Mesa were

chapter leaders who were honored during the Community Associations

Institute, Orange County Regional Chapter, awards dinner March 1 at the

Sutton Place Hotel in Newport Beach. More than 250 association members

attended the gala, which included dinner, dancing, casino gambling and

the awards. The institute is a nonprofit organization created in 1973 to

educate and represent the nation’s 205,000 community associations that

include condominium associations, homeowner associations and

cooperatives, housing more than 32 million Americans. There are more than

300 community associations in Orange County. . . . Two Newport Harbor

High School seniors, Matt Meredith and Carly Geehr, were recently named

national merit finalists. Finalists must score in the top one-half of the

top 1% among students taking the PSAT, a preliminary college entrance

exam. They are also required to submit academic transcripts, essays,

letters of recommendation and SAT I scores. The two are among 15,000

national finalists who will vie for one of 7,900 merit scholarships.

Meredith is 18 and will attend UCLA next year. He is the editor of The

Beacon, the high school newspaper, plays guitar in his band, The Spin,

does commercial Web design and competes in cross-country and track and

field for the Sailors. Geehr, 17, is Associated Student Body Secretary,

the founding president of Students Against Drunk Driving, does commercial

Web design and enjoys oil painting. She is captain of the high school

girls’ swim team and is a former member of the U.S. national swim team.

She plans to major in bioengineering at Stanford University.
