UCI’s Horwitz honored

UC Irvine junior Jon Horwitz is the Big West Conference Player of

the Week after hitting .588 (10-for-17) over four games, leading the

Anteaters to a 3-1 record last week.

The center fielder recorded multiple hits in three of the four games,

as UC Irvine toppled Pac-10 opponents UCLA once and California twice.

Horwitz also scored four times, drove in three runs and stole two bases

for the week.

Horwitz went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI in a 6-4 win over UCLA. He

had a key hit to spark a two-run rally to push the Anteaters past the

Bruins. He hit .539 (7 for 13) in the California series, including a

3-for-6 effort with a run and an RBI in a 5-4, 10-inning win on Saturday.

He currently carries a seven-game hitting streak.

The Anteaters (16-13) have won eight of their last 12 games. UCI

returns to action hosting UNLV Tuesday at Anteater Ballpark at 6 p.m.,

then opens Big West Conference play with a three-game series at Pacific

March 28-30.
