Prep baseball: Sailors hit a low

NEWPORT BEACH - Year One under Newport Harbor High Coach Joel

Desguin is definitely at a low point after an 11-0 Sea View League loss

to visiting Woodbridge Wednesday. The Sailors managed one hit and were

strikeout victims 10 times in losing their fourth straight league game.

So, Desguin is planning to make the Sailors learn from their mistakes and

learn to despise losing.

“Every loss should hurt; if it doesn’t then you should go do something

else,” Desguin said. “If the loss doesn’t hurt, your heart’s not in it

and you’re not playing your hardest. If you get used to losing then you

don’t need to play anymore. If I get used to losing then I don’t need to

coach anymore.”

Newport (2-5, 0-4) broke up Woodbridge pitcher Mike Peck’s no-hitter

in the fifth inning when catcher Cameron Pemstein chipped a single to

left center field. Pemstein advanced to second on a balk and moved to

third on a groundout, but the Sailors left him stranded.

Peck’s one-hit complete effort included just one walk and six

groundouts in 100 pitches. Woodbridge (4-4, 2-1), which had 13 hits, took

advantage offensively in the fourth when designated hitter Hunter Swanson

nailed a two-run home run over the right center field fence.

Newport senior Cody Forsythe, who was ill and suffering from

headaches, came in relief in the fifth inning.

Desguin said the Sailors played well defensively, committing just two

errors in the final inning.

“We can’t hit,” Desguin said. “It doesn’t matter how we play in the

field, if we only get one hit. We average maybe one or two hits a game.

It’s frustrating to me and I know it’s frustrating to the kids. We’re not

going to stop teaching and coaching and trying to get better. I don’t

expect them to stop trying to work and get better.”
