Boys basketball: Melum, Conte South All-Stars
Newport Harbor High senior Tony Melum and Costa Mesa High senior
David Conte will represent the South boys in the Orange County All-Star
Basketball Game, scheduled April 20 at Orange Coast College.
Conte, a 5-foot-10 senior point guard bound for Cal State Los Angeles,
was the Co-Most Valuable Player in the Pacific Coast League. He averaged
21.5 points, including a career-high 43 in a December tournament win over
Marina. He was a two-time All-PCL performer and was All-Newport-Mesa
District as a junior. He helped Coach Bob Serven’s Mustangs go 18-10,
tying the school single-season victory record established by the 1966
squad. As a junior, he helped Mesa earn a share of the PCL crown, the
program’s first league title.
Melum, a 6-6 senior forward, averaged 21.5 points to help the Sailors
win the Sea View League title, the school’s first outright league
championship since 1985. Melum, an All-CIF Southern Section Division I-A
choice as a junior, helped Coach Larry Hirst’s Tars advance to the CIF
Division II-AA second round, before being eliminated by Villa Park.
Newport was 20-7.
The South will be guided by Mission Viejo High Coach Jeff Cunningham.
The North boys will be coached by Cypress High’s Jeff Russell.
The boys game is scheduled for 8 p.m., following the girls game at 5.
No local girls players were selected.
