Newport Beach Little League: Glory days, Angels Win

With two victories last week, the Newport Beach Little League’s

Angels improved their record to 5-0 in Major Division action.

The Angels edged the Dodgers, 3-2, in a thrilling game. Shane Boras

went the distance on the mound for the Angels, allowing just two unearned

runs and five hits. The Dodgers’ Andrew Watt was also impressive as a

pitcher, allowing nor runs and only two hits in his three innings of work

In the top of the sixth inning with the score tied, 2-2, the Angels’

Scott Ely smashed a two-out single to left field, driving in Boras for

the win.

The Dodgers’ Scott Askew and Luke Giener chipped one hit each in the

bottom of third and they scored when an error was committed on a hard-hit

ball by Ryan Austin.

The Angels rallied back the next inning when Boras drove in Jordan

Kurtz and Michael Page, who had gotten on board on errors.

In the Angles first win, March 21, they defeated the Braves, 8-6. The

Angels broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Andy Rovzar doubled, and Kurtz followed with a nice bunt single for the

Angels. Both scored when Page ripped a triple to right field. Page later

scored on a single by Boras.

Rovzar finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Page

went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Alex Schafnitz, Thomas Koss (3-for-3 hitting) led the Braves, who were

also supported by solid pitching from Camden Nicholson.

In other NBLL Majors action:

Reds 9, Mariners 4 - The Reds’ Brett Bartlett pitched 3 1/2 innings in

relief, giving up only four hits while striking out four. Sean Tokuyama

went 3 for 3 in the hitting department for the Reds. He chipped a single

up the middle to drive in a run in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew

Silva and Timmy Winning delivered back-to-back doubles, also in that

first frame, after Evan McNerney walked.

Eric Mooney and J.P. Gormly also had key hits for the Reds. Michael

Bear, who went 3 for 4, led the Mariners, who rallied to score four runs

in the bottom of the fourth.

In NBLL AA Division action:

Diamondbacks 11, Reds 7 - The Diamondbacks rolled to victory led by

the solid pitching from Brandon Pick and Michael Taormina. Catcher Eric

Hallett and Dominic Disano, who had a key RBI in the fourth inning, also

made important contributions for the D-Backs, who improved to 4-1-1.

In AAA Division action:

Red Sox 5, Braves 1 - The Red Sox improved to 6-0 on the season thanks

to the pitching of David Rabosky and Blake Thomsen. Rabosky struck out

five and allowed only one run, while Thomsen struck out four and allowed

no runs. Thomsen, Chris Freeman, Parker Werline, Preston Wisser and Chad

Morabito each had hits, and Morabito made a show-stopping diving catch in

left field.

Braves pitcher David Guibord struck out eight in three innings of

work, allowing only two runs. Dylan Salisbury delivered two hits for the

Braves.

Giants 9, Yankees 6 - The Giants answered a 6-1 deficit, capped by a

three-run home run blast by Beau Attyah in the bottom of the fifth

inning. The Giants also rallied to win behind the strong pitching of Jack

Gerdau, who completed three hitless and scoreless innings, while striking

out four batters to close out the win.

The Giants’ Eric Chebil contributed three hits and two RBIs, while

Mitch Gardner scored twice. On defense, the Giants received solid

pitching from Josh Harrison and standout fielding support from Michael

Hayde and Alex Merline.

The Yankees’ right-lefty tandem of Josh and Jessie Starnes offered

steady performances.
