NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Harbor High softball team scored two

runs in the fourth inning and held off Back Bay rival Corona del Mar for

a 3-2 nonleague win, at the Sailors field Thursday.

In the bottom of the first inning, Newport junior leadoff hitter

Athena Vasquez pounded an 2-0 pitch for a home run over the center field

fence.

CdM answered in the second, when junior Meaghan Bunney and sophomore

Sarah Stern scored after a Lauren Jacobson single and a Heather Lohrman

sacrifice bunt.

However, Coach Jess Martinson’s Sailors (13-2) came back in the fourth

with two runs, as sophomore Jennifer Gummerman and freshman Kyley Dill

scored on an error.

Newport junior Kim Moore earned her ninth win in 10 starts, striking

out six and walking just one, while scattering seven hits.

CdM Coach Yogi Johnson did not attend Thursday’s game, because she is

in the hospital, reportedly suffering from minor iron deficiency.
