NEWPORT-MESA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD MEETING WRAP-UP

Here are some of the decisions coming out of the Newport-Mesa Unified

School District board meeting Tuesday.

ENROLLMENT

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board received preliminary housing information regarding student

enrollment.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Schools that may have higher enrollment than capacity next year

include Newport Coast, Killybrooke and Whittier elementary schools.

WHAT THEY SAID:

For the Estancia High School zone, “it’s an opportunity to help level

out and recover from four to five years of constant growth. It’s a

positive picture,” said Mike Fine, assistant superintendent.

GOALS AND PRIORITIES

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board adopted the 2002-03 goals and priorities.

WHAT IT MEANS:

District officials will commit to action plans reflecting these goals

and ensure the budget is adjusted accordingly. Most of the new goals

relate to the district’s efforts to instruct and assess English-language

learners.

WHAT THEY SAID:

“Our strategic plan calls for us to try to reach lofty goals,” Supt.

Robert Barbot said.

EASEMENT COSTS

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board adopted a resolution declaring its intent to convey an

easement at Costa Mesa High School.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The location of the proposed easement is along the northern boundary

of the campus, near the city soccer field area. Conversion of the

ownership of the sewer line from the Orange County Sanitation District to

the Costa Mesa Sanitary District could cost the school district more than

$5,000 per year in new sewer fees to support Davis Elementary and Costa

Mesa High schools. A public hearing on the issue will be held April 9.
