College sports news: UCI women’s soccer and volleyball look to reap

CRAWFORD HALL - UC Irvine women’s teams, soccer and volleyball,

received added help in their quests to become contenders in their

respective divisions. The Anteaters’ women’s soccer team added five new

players through recruiting, while Coach Charlie Brande’s volleyball squad

received four after athletes signed their national letters of intent.

For Coach Marine Cano’s women’s soccer team, forward Lauren Baer

(Westlake High School), the 2001 Marmonte League Offensive Player of the

Year who also helped her Southern Cal United club soccer team win a state

championship, is one of five new players.

Forwards Kim Lloyd (Monrovia) and Nicole Mularkey (Long Beach City

College) will look to bolster the Anteaters’ scoring attack. In addition,

midfielders Leah Dawson (Long Beach City College) and Joanna Irwin (Dana

Hills High), who Cano also has a high amount of confidence in, have also

come on to contribute.

The UCI women’s volleyball team features young talent in its incoming

class, which includes 5-foot-10 outside hitter Sarah Teslevich and 6-2

middle blocker Terbrie Taylor, as well as outside hitter Rachel Greenberg

(Marymount) and middle blocker Amanda Vasquez (Moanalua)

Teslevich, from Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix, Ariz., earned

honorable mention All-American recognition as well as first-team

all-state honors this past season.

Taylor, out of Harvard-Westlake High, is a Division III CIF Player of

the Year and a two-time, All-Mission League middle blocker. She garnered

2001 All-CIF, all-state and CIF MVP titles and helped her team to 2001

and 2002 CIF and state championships.
