Tennis: Ball advances to semifinals at Easter Bowl

PALM SPRINGS - Corona del Mar High freshman standout Carsten Ball,

tournament ready and tough from facing older players on the highly

regarded high school team this season, advanced to the semifinals in the

boys 14s Tuesday at the Easter Bowl junior tennis tournament at Riviera

Resort.

Ball, seeded second, defeated sixth-seeded Jonathan Boym of Marlboro,

N.J., in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-4, and will square off against

third-seeded Marcus Fugate of Fairport, N.Y., today at 12:30 p.m.

A left-hander, Ball is trying to become the first area player to win

the boys 14s Easter Bowl title since Geoff Abrams in 1992.

The Easter Bowl is the United States Tennis Association’s Super

National Spring Championships.

In girls 18s doubles, CdM junior Anne Yelsey and her partner, Riza

Zalameda of Los Angeles, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-7 (2),

6-2, 6-1 victory in the Round of 16 over Lauren Perl (San Diego) and Eva

Wang (Haverford, Pa.).

Yelsey-Zalameda, the No. 2 seed, will play sixth-seeded Judith Devera

and Lindsey Nelson, both of Orange, in today’s quarters at 5 p.m.

In boys 18s doubles Tuesday, CdM junior Garrett Snyder and his

partner, Brett Van Linge of Woodbridge, were knocked out in the Round of

16 by Patrick Buchanan (Fullerton) and Kevin McQuaid (Huntington Beach),

6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-1.
