Prep baseball: Mesa wins in ninth

IRVINE - Mike Carrasco doubled in Michael McGuire for the go-ahead

run and Costa Mesa High held on for a 5-4, nine-inning Pacific Coast

League baseball victory at University Tuesday.

McGuire, who singled with one out, scored all the way from first on

Carrasco’s clutch drive into the right-center-field gap to help the

Mustangs improve to 9-8, 3-3 in league, one game back of tri-leaders

University, Laguna Beach and Northwood.

Mesa senior Nick Cabico, who surrendered only one earned run in seven

strong innings on the mound, singled in a run in the sixth, as did Nathan

Hunter, to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead.

But University parlayed a dropped fly ball into a pair of runs to tie

it in its half of the sixth.

Sophomore Adam Jorgenson worked two scoreless innings of relief to

earn the victory and improve to 2-0.

Carracso was 3 for 5, including an RBI single in the fifth, and Cabico

fanned six and scored twice to help the Mustangs’ cause. The win was the

second straight for Mesa, which completed the Pride of the Coast

Tournament Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Saddleback. Cabico threw a

complete-game shutout against the Roadrunners.

The Trojans and Mustangs hook up again Friday at Mesa in the deciding

game of their three-game league series at 3:15 p.m.
