HUNTINGTON BEACH UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT WRAP-UP

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board approved a new round of digital high school grant funding

for technology support and staff training at Huntington Beach, Marina and

Westminster high schools.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Funding amount is projected to be $97,515 for Huntington Beach High

School, $111,915 for Marina and $115,785 for Westminster. The district

has certified to the state that these schools have met the digital high

school funding match requirements.

FAVOR / AGAINST

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board approved the adult school’s request to submit an application

to the Orange County Department of Education for “Early Intervention for

School Success, Preschool Teaching Training and Support Network,” grant

funds in the amount of $2,800.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The funds will be used to provide training and materials for two

preschool teachers. No matching funds are required.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The outstanding work of several high school teachers and students was

recognized.

Officials honored the district’s Teachers of the Year for 2001-02, Pat

Anger of Marina High School, Roy Batelli of Ocean View High School and

Denis Gitschier of Fountain Valley High School.

Also receiving kudos were students from Edison and Fountain Valley

high schools who submitted winning entries in the “There Ought To Be A

Law” essay contest sponsored by Assemblyman Tom Harman. The winner was

Edison High junior Travis Jensen, whose essay proposed to combat child

abuse using alcohol taxes. His idea will be molded into a bill and

introduced by Harman, said his chief of staff Bob Biddle.

The three other semifinalists honored were Brad Stapleton and Harold

Wang of Edison, and Stephanie Antal of Fountain Valley.

NEXT MEETING

When: A study session will be held on Monday, April 22, 7:30 p.m.

Where: 10251 Yorktown Ave. The board will discuss school finance and

the district budget and proposed cuts.
