NEWPORT-MESA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD MEETING WRAP-UP
Here are some of the actions taken at Tuesday’s school board meeting
of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District:
ADDITION AT WHITTIER
WHAT HAPPENED:
The board unanimously agreed to put a relocatable building at Whittier
Elementary School next year.
WHAT IT MEANS:
The building will accommodate the expected growth at the school next
year.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“For the last couple of years, enrollment at Whittier has been pretty
flat, so it’s a little bit of an anomaly [next] year,” said Mike Fine,
the district’s assistant superintendent.
VOTE: 7-0
SEWER LINE EASEMENT
WHAT HAPPENED:
The board granted an easement to the Orange County Sanitation District
to build a public sewer through and along the property of Costa Mesa High
School.
WHAT IT MEANS:
After the sewer line is built, it will be turned over to the Costa
Mesa Sanitary District, and the school district will assess user fees of
about $5,200 a year. But the district has negotiated not to pay the fees
for a 10-year period after the transfer takes effect.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“This is a routine matter except for the transfer of ownership,” Fine
said.
VOTE: 6-0; trustee Jim Ferryman abstained because he sits on the
boards of both the Orange County Sanitation and Costa Mesa Sanitary
districts.
NEXT MEETING:
WHO: Newport-Mesa Unified School District board
WHEN: 7 p.m. April 23
WHERE: Newport-Mesa Unified School District headquarters, 2985-A Bear
St., Costa Mesa
