College softball: Vanguard sweeps in doubleheader
ORANGE - The Vanguard University softball team, ranked No. 20 in
the NAIA, proved successful in nonconference action after battling to
victories in an eventful doubleheader over host Chapman Thursday.
The Lions (30-19-1) began with 17 hits and three runs in the final
inning to pull out a 7-6 win in 10 innings. Vanguard pitcher Gina
Liebengood went the distance, recording six strikeouts and holding
Chapman (16-18) to two runs in the bottom of the 10th.
Jill Jessen slammed a two-run double and Celina Camarillo added an RBI
single in the 10th to put the Lions ahead 7-4.
In the nightcap, Vanguard collected 16 hits and won, 9-3, in the usual
seven innings. Lion pitcher Marciea Ball held Chapman to three hits and
earned her 12th win of the season. Shortstop Lisa Jackson and Cheri Smith
pounded out three hits each, while Jessen, Jessica Thompson and Lauren
Manriquez contributed two hits each for the Lions.
