Softball: Liebengood sharp for Vanguard
FULLERTON - Vanguard University senior pitcher Gina Liebengood
recorded her 36th career shutout, and her single-season high 12th this
year, as the visiting Lions swept a Golden State Athletic Conference
doubleheader Saturday against Hope International at Cal State Fullerton.
Vanguard blanked Hope in the first game, 8-0, behind Liebengood’s
two-hitter and rallied to defeat the GSAC cellar dwellers in the second
game, 4-2.
Vanguard improved to 32-19-1, 13-7 in conference, while Hope fell to
9-29, 0-22.
Vanguard’s Rachael Rolle, 6 for 8 in the two games, singled home the
winning run in the seventh inning of the second game, when the Lions
scored twice to snap a 2-2 tie.
Cheri Smith, who missed a home run early in the second game because no
temporary fences were in place, finished 4 for 8 in the doubleheader with
two RBIs in the opener.
Vanguard travels to Cap Baptist Tuesday for a GSAC doubleheader.
