The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team rallies for a 12-15,

12-15, 15-9, 15-9, 15-10 victory over Back Bay rival Corona del Mar.

“These are the toughest matches to lose, being up, 2-0,” CdM Coach Steve

Conti says. Newport Harbor’s Dana Mesenbrink, the only senior on Coach

Dan Glenn’s squad, slams 28 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Matt

Jameson records 22 and junior hitter Scott Archbold adds 20. Newport

junior setter Travis Nelson contributes 82 assists. In the fifth game,

Newport builds an 8-0 lead, and then CdM answers with an 8-2 run. But the

Tars outscore the Sea Kings, 5-2, down the stretch. Dennis Alshuler leads

CdM with 21 kills.

Newport Harbor senior Joe Urban crushes his 19th career home run to

set a Newport-Mesa District record. Urban goes deep in the fifth inning.

His seventh homer of the season comes on an 0-1 pitch, but it is not

enough as Santa Margarita wins, 10-5. Urban matches his home run total

from his junior season. He also collects two home runs as a freshman in

1994 and three in ’95.

Shawn Ferryman hammers 13 kills while his Costa Mesa teammate Matt

Peca provides plenty of defense with 25 digs to help boost the Mustangs

boys volleyball team to a 15-13, 11-15, 15-10, 15-11 victory over Laguna

Hills.

Corona del Mar High’s C.W. Ramsay belts two home runs and pitches

effectively to lead the Sea Kings’ baseball team to a 5-2 win over

Newport-Mesa District rival Estancia in the third-place game of the Pride

of the Coast Tournament. Ramsay, CdM’s leadoff hitter, tags a two-run

homer to right field with Scott Patton aboard after a walk and a stolen

base, breaking a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning. Ramsay yields just one

earned run, his first of the spring in 18-plus innings, raising his

earned-run average to 0.38.

The Costa Mesa baseball team wins its 11th-place game of the Pride of

the Coast Tournament with a 10-3 triumph over Artesia. Mike Meyers

crushes a home run and a triple in the fifth inning, when the Mustangs

score eight runs. Steve Samaniego contributes two RBIs and Will Mendez

adds a triple.

Newport Harbor freshman pitcher Michael Buist retires the first 14

batters and allows just two hits in leading the Sailors baseball team to

a 3-1 victory over Bolsa Grande in the fifth-place semifinal of the Pride

of the Coast Tournament. The Tars’ southpaw disposes of 18 of the first

19 batters he faces before losing his shutout bid in the seventh. He

records eight strikeouts and walks none in his complete-game victory.
