Prep softball: Mustangs stun Sea Kings, 7-0
CORONA DEL MAR - The Costa Mesa High softball team ended Corona del
Mar’s three-game Pacific Coast League winning streak with a 7-0 victory,
on the Sea Kings’ field Thursday.
The Mustangs (13-7, 3-1 in the PCL) took it to their Newport-Mesa
District rival by smacking out 10 hits and playing sound defense.
Costa Mesa sophomore Michelle Miller, a pinch hitter, smashed a
two-run triple in the sixth with a line-drive shot that went over third
base and down the left field line. Uyen Mai, another sophomore, and
junior Katy Renish scored.
Mai, a leftfielder, went 3 for 3, scored two runs, earned one RBI and
stole two bases, while junior shortstop Ann Marie Topps went 2 for 4 with
two RBIs and a double. Sophomore second-base player Jane-E Yamamoto also
went 2 for 4, recording two RBIs, one stolen base and one run scored for
Mesa.
Corona (6-7, 3-1) finished with four hits and committed three errors,
as pitcher Alissa Zoelle took the loss.
Mesa senior pitcher Tess Lindsay completed her second shutout of the
season, allowing four hits and one walk, and retiring the side in order
in the first, second and fifth innings.
