1. YESTERDAY, TODAY and TOMORROW. Historian Howard Zinn will discuss

America’s involvement in Afghanistan in his lecture titled “America

Today, America Past” at 7 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Newport

Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave. Tickets for Friday include

dinner and live music by classical pianist Alan Terricciano and are $55.

Zinn, professor emeritus of political science at Boston University, has

written 14 books.

2. EARTH DAY HAS ARRIVED. Events will take place Saturday at

Shellmaker Island in Newport Beach and Crystal Cove. At 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

at Shellmaker, activities will include live entertainment, environmental

exhibits, games and displays, and tours. Food will be available for

640-6746. Plant dune and riparian plants and install recycling bins at

Crystal Cove from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The California State Parks Foundation

spearheaded the Earth Day Restoration and Cleanup program in 1998.

beach cleanup between 9 a.m. and noon will be sponsored by the Church of

Scientology-Mission of Newport. All are encouraged to attend. Park in the

Los Trancos parking lot off Coast Highway. Bring snacks, bottled water,

hats and suntan lotion. Latex gloves will be available. Reservations

3. DEEP BREATHS. An exercise program that integrates breathing,

walking and meditation called “Breathwalk” will begin at 4:30 p.m. Sunday

at Fairview Regional Park, on Placentia Avenue, Costa Mesa. $30 per walk,
