Baseball: Cal Poly tops UCI, 7-4

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal Poly San Luis Obispo scored five runs in the

fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead and Tyler Fitch made it stand up Friday

as the host Mustangs defeated UC Irvine, 7-4, in a Big West Conference

baseball game before 575 at Baggett Stadium.

In the Mustangs’ fourth, designated hitter Bryan Gant and right

fielder Chalon Tietje had triples, while Josh Wyrick had an RBI double

and Kyle Wilson, Jason Barringer and Aaron Escobedo produced run-scoring

singles.

UC Irvine (22-18, 4-3 in the Big West) scored twice in the top of the

fourth to tie it, 2-2, as designated hitter R.J. Brown belted a two-run

home run, his second of the year. Brown and first baseman Matt Anderson

had two hits each for the Anteaters, who will send freshman right-hander

Brett Smith (3-0 with a 4.64 ERA) to the mound today as the three-game

series continues at 1 p.m.

Fitch, 6-4, worked 7 1/3 innings for the victory, while relievers

Nolan Moser and Kevin Correia closed out the Anteaters for Cal Poly

(21-21-1, 6-4).

UCI starter Sean Tracey, who entered the game with a 6-3 record and

2.52 ERA, suffered the loss, giving up seven earned runs and 10 hits in 3

2/3 innings. Paul French pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings out of the

bullpen, but the damage had already been done.
