Newport Beach Little League: Angels’ defense too much for Yankees

The Newport Beach Little League Angels combined solid defense with

timely hitting and clutch pitching to defeat the Yankees, 2-0, in Majors

Division action.

Andy Rovzar pitched a complete game one-hitter, while Shane Boras made

several key plays at shortstop. Angels catcher Michael Page gunned down

two would-be base stealers.

The Angels scored in the top of the first inning, when Rovzar singled,

stole second and later scored on a wild pitch. Page ripped a double to

left field and scored when the ball got away from Yankee outfielders in

the sixth.

The Yankees received steady pitching performances from Brett

Weinberger, Patrick Marin-Finn and Matt Morris. Tyler Haly also

contributed to the Yankees’ defense that held the Angels to two runs.

In other majors action:

Giants 5, Cards 2 - Joe Eberhard pitched three scoreless innings and

Taylor Stone pitched two effective innings to preserve the victory.

Eberhard was also very strong defensively.

Kevin Kottke led the Giants’ offense with a triple, single, an RBI and

a run scored. Mark Kanow had two singles and scored a run. Nick Taylor

had a single and two RBIs. Kendall Pick and Nick Klien both had a single

and an RBI for the Giants.

In NBLL AA Division action:

Mariners 8, Giants 7 - Andrew McCormick pounded out a walk-off grand

slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Mariners past the

previously unbeaten Giants. McCormick’s slam marked the second time in as

many games he has crushed a grand slam.

Ben Greiner earned a key RBI to keep the sixth inning alive for the

Mariners.

Mariner pitcher Grant Davis and reliever Cort Hastings also

contributed in the victory.

Mariners 7, Red Sox 2 - Hastings and Red Sox ace Clark Cashion battled

in a pitchers’ duel in the early innings, until the Mariners caught fire.

Greiner, Alan Brown, Bryce Ashton and Zach Morabito collected hits to

provide the Mariners with momentum.

For the Red Sox, Brandon McHugh, Matt Berry and Taylor Ross paced the

offense.

Giants 17, Braves 7 - Before the Giants took on the Mariners, they

defeated the Braves, as Brian Ford went 4 for 4 with two doubles and

three runs scored. Max Priestly (3 for 3, two runs scored) and Graeme

Fraser (2 for 2, two runs scored) were also perfect at the plate.

Zach Socoloske, Tony McCoy, Billy Macdonald, Justin Tucker, Allie

Pries and John Prickett also contributed timely hits. Ford, Macdonald,

Pries and Prickett contributed solid pitching performances, while

Jonathan Ben-Menahem and Dan Steele added key defensive efforts.

For the Braves, Nicholas Manning recorded six strikeouts, and Kevin

Dales and Scott Youngman also pitched. Ryan Grainger, Mike Pawell and

Gianni Ferrante led the Braves’ offense.

Yankees 16, Angels 11 - The Yankees got their first win as Bruce

Bearer pitched three solid innings and Austin Jones struck out the side

in the final inning to preserve the win. Jack Schloemer and Sammy White

backed up the pitching with great defense, while Alex Morrison and

Spencer Haley were the hitting stars with three RBIs apiece.

Red Sox 18, Reds 3 - The Red Sox scored early and often, led by the

hitting of Cole Chatham, Michael Dahl and Matt Berry, who hit a home run.

Pitchers Taylor Epp, Brent Lawson and Taylor Ross combined to shut the

Reds down.

In NBLL AAA Division action:

Dodgers 8, Cardinals 3 - Dietrich Stauffer pitched effectively to lead

the Dodgers to the win. Ronnie Sadler and Kevin Wang displayed strong

hitting to lead the Dodgers offense. Michael Borchard and Wang also

contributed to the pitching effort, while Emery Molnar and Jacob Sanooke

led the defensive effort.

Peter Fraaza and Ben Capaldi also pitched well for the Cardinals.

Dodgers 14, Yankees 4 - Borchard collected two hits, including a

three-run home run. Stauffer and Brandon Cohen also added two hits each.

Dodger pitchers Wang, Borchard and Nick Taormina keyed the win with their

work on the mound, while Joey Booth contributed on defense.

Gavin Koontz played solid defense for the Yankees, and Wes Neslien led

the Yankee offense.

Giants 17, Mariners 9 - Beau Attyah had three hits and scored four

times for the Giants. Also for the Giants, Eric Chebil had three hits and

scored three times. Josh Harrison had two hits and three RBIs and Jack

Gerdau had two hits and scored twice. Giants’ pitching struck out 11

Mariners. Jamie Heinecke pitched last three innings for the win. The

Giants are 8-2-1. The Mariners were led by Reed Williams, who had two

hits and scored twice. J.B. Salem and two hits and scored twice and Chase

Carlile scored two runs.

Braves 10, Cardinals 7 - Andrew Dunlap led the Braves with a home run

in the first inning and he pitched three strong inings. Steven Bruno and

David Guibord closed out the game with a combined six strikeouts in three

innings. Benny Townsend caught two line drives. Nick Flamson, Jarrett

Logan, Michael Franklin, Michael Delahanty and Francesco Impagliazzo each

scored at least one run. Austin Allen and Dylan Salisbury stood out

defensively.

Braves 9, Giants 9 - It was a pitching duel in the early going as the

Braves’ David Guibord allowed just one run on a solid hit by Beau Attyah,

and had six strikouts. The Giants’ Jamie Heinecke pitched three innings,

allowing just one run. The Giants scored six in the fourth inning with

Mitch Gardner, Eric Chebil, Michael Hayde and Peter Weidner leading the

way. The Braves countered with five runs in the fifth inning with runs by

Nick Flamson, Andrew Dunlap, David Weiland, Michael Franklin and Dylan

Salisbury. Benny Townsend had two RBIs in the slugfest, and Jarrett Logan

had two hits and three runs scored. The Giants led, 9-7, in the sixth,

but the Braves evened the scored with runs by Logan and Dunlap and a big

hit from Michael Delahanty.

Dodgers 12, Diamondbacks 7 - Kevin Wang and Michael Borchard teamed up

on the mound for the Dodgers. Dietrich Stauffer had a two-run single in

the fifth inning to break a tie. Joey Booth followed with a run-scoring

single and Borchard topped it off with a two-run homer, his fifth of the

season. The Dodgers were led defensively by Nick Taormina, Dietrich

Stauffer and Sean Okita. J.D. Abbott pitched well for the D-backs, while

Jon Christian and Randall Nelson made several defensive plays. Benjamin

Noe and Christian St. Clair led the D-backs’ hitting.
