High school turns up the volume on dance show
-- Suzie Harrison
Laguna Beach High School Dance Company will present its Spring 2002
Dance Concert, “VOLUME,” this weekend next.
“The performance focuses on the world we live in today -- our issues,
politics, trends and pop culture -- as interpreted through dance and
music,” said producer and director Tod Kubo.
“The sets being designed and built for this show will be our most
technically complex ever, including six video screens that will project
images complementing the dance numbers,” Kubo added.
The show will include the dance styles of jazz, tap, ballet, modern,
lyrical, world dance and hip hop.
VOLUME marks the company’s 14th original dance concert.
“Over 100 students will participate in VOLUME, and the show is our
most ambitious ever in terms of guest choreographers,” Kubo said
In addition to numbers by Kubo, the performance will showcase the
works of Leanne Alduenda, the director of the Defore Dance Center; Jose
Silva, who is presently performing in the “Lion King” at the Pantages
Theater; and Stevie Ray Anthony, who has worked with Whitney Houston, MTV
and Boyz II Men.
Kubo brings the highest level of expertise to the dance program -- he
choreographs internationally and most recently has received a West Coast
Theater League award for his choreography in Annie.
Performances are April 25-27 and May 2-4 at the Artist’s Theater of
Laguna Beach High School. All performances start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are
