An evening to celebrate community

The Neighborhood Congregational Church is hosting a special evening of

arts, crafts and a musical review at 6 p.m. on Sat., May 4.

“All the proceeds from the arts and crafts sale and the performance

will support the programs that the church supports,” said church

spokeswoman Nancy Pearlman.

The programs benefited include the Children’s Ministry, Healing Touch

Spiritual Ministry, Labyrinth Walk, Taize, Laguna Outreach and Friendship

Shelter.

“This is truly a community event,” said Pearlman.

The musical review, “Broadway: Rogers With Heart” will be performed by

local theater company No Square Theatre. The artists who are contributing

to the arts and crafts show are all local residents.

The arts and crafts show will open at 6 p.m., followed by the

performance at 7:30 p.m. The show will open again at 11:30 a.m. and run

until 1 p.m. on Sunday after the church service.

Donations to attend the Saturday event are $15 and can be made in

Times writer to deliver talk The Unitarian Universalist

Fellowship will host Teresa Watanabe, religion writer with the Los

Angeles Times, at 10:30 a.m. on May 5.

Her talk, “A Time of Religious Turmoil,” centers on the current

religious crisis on the conduct of some Catholic priests and the rights

of Muslim women.

Last year, Watanabe was awarded the James O. Supple award for Religion

Writer of the Year from the Religion Newswriters Assn.

Discussion on Catholic Church crisis setFather Eamon

O’Gorman will hold an evening of open discussion, prayer and questions on

the current crisis in the Catholic Church starting at 7:30 p.m., May 6,

at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church.

Parishioners as well as members of the community who are concerned

about the issue are invited to attend.

Established in 1932, St. Catherine of Siena has more than 1,200

registered parishioners. In addition to its outreach to the

Spanish-speaking community and an active children’s and adult education

ministry, the church also sponsors programs such as Eucharistic Ministers

to the sick, Re-Membering, Church Art and Environment, Prayer Line,

Respect for Life and the Women’s Council.

Daily Mass is held at 8 a.m., Monday-Saturday; Vigil Mass, 5:30 p.m.,

Saturday; Sunday masses are at 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m., noon and 5:30

p.m.; and a Spanish mass is held at 1:30 p.m.
