Community college track and field: OCC men and women both runner-up

in OEC

COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College women’s track and field team

nearly pulled off an upset and defeated Orange Empire Conference champion

Santa Ana, at the OEC preliminaries Friday at OCC.

Instead, the Pirates, who finished second, 4.5 points behind Santa

Ana, ruled the distance race events. And, overall, the OCC women advanced

14 athletes, led by freshman Michelle Icban, to the Southern California

Preliminaries, Saturday at UC San Diego.

Meanwhile, the OCC men’s squad also finished second in the OEC

preliminaries, 30 points behind champion Riverside. The Pirates advanced

20 athletes, led by sophomore Chuck Loo, to Saturday’s So Cal Prelims,

which take the top 6 from each event.

First-year OCC Coach John Knox said he is excited about Saturday’s

meet, and believes he will have at least a handful move on to the Finals,

the following week at San Diego State.

On the women’s side, Icban doubled, winning the 5,000-meter race

(17:59.96) and the 10,000 (37:52.09), while freshman Jennifer Finaldi and

sophomore Lindsay Allen set OEC records in the pole vault (11-foot-2) and

steeplechase (11:34.43), respectively.

OCC freshman Ginger Liechtly won the high jump (5-4 1/4), and

sophomore Julie Kroening advanced to So Cal in six events including the

400 and 1,600 relays.

On the men’s side, Loo, an OCC team captain, won the 110 high hurdles (15.72) and advanced in four events, while freshman Shaun Walker won the

javelin throw (179-0).

Keinan Briggs, a freshman who also plays for the OCC men’s basketball

team, also advanced in four events, while OCC All-Mission Conference

tailback Niles Mittasch advanced in two events, which featured a

runner-up finish in the 200 (22.63).
