Newport Harbor Baseball Association: Cubs stymie Reds

NEWPORT BEACH

In a battle for first, the Cubs got solid pitching and enough hitting

to defeat the Reds, 6-0, in a Bronco League game.

With the win, the Cubs take sole ownership of first place.

Austin Carden (who had a hit in the third inning) and Michael Helfrich

(who doubled home two runs in the third inning) each pitched three

shutout innings with Adrian Luchs relieving in the seventh to preserve

the shutout.

The Cubs were led on defense by Andrew McDonald and by Andrew Kaban

and Preston Davies (who contributed hits in the four-run third inning).

Arventi Ammon and Tom Badum each singled and scored in the third inning.

Scott Simon added to the hitting attack in the third.

The Cubs received solid play from Darron Gude, Katherine Cameron and

Troy Selby.

In other Bronco Division action Saturday:

* BRAVES 10, DIAMONDBACKS 8 - The Braves wasted no time scoring six

runs in the first inning on RBI doubles by Niko Hernandez, Arturo Vasquez

and Ethan Flores.

Ned Lyon threw three strong innings, allowing only one earned run.

Cameron Holmes caught a line drive and doubled up the runner at second

as the Braves escaped a late-inning Diamondback rally.

Ben Frazier led the D’Backs offensively with a home run.

* DODGERS 6, RED SOX 0 - The Dodger offense came alive in the fourth

and fifth innings to seal the 6-0 victory over the Red Sox.

The Dodgers’ offense heated up in the fourth with two runs scored, and

they added three more in the fifth to make it, 6-0.

Garrett Morgan, who dazzled both offensively and defensively, singled

twice and doubled, and made a running shoestring catch to close out the

victory for the Dodgers.

R.J. D’Cruz (who struck out seven of 10 batters he faced in three

innings) had three hits and scored two runs, Brandon Davis added two hits

while Peter Kinney, Danny Moskovits (pitched two shut out innings, and

dove deep in the hole at short throwing out the runner from his knees)

and Holden Gray-Keough each added key hits.

John Swift pitched two shut out innings allowing one hit.

Spenser Venegas and Matt Waller also played well.

Trevor Davis also contributed to the Dodgers’ defensive gems snagging

two lined shots, one off his shoes and the other a leaping catch.

The Red Sox offense was led by Vince Newsome, who ripped a double to

the fence, and Nathan Talbot, who singled to deep center.

The Red Sox had good pitching from Arian Rodriguez, Coby Peterson and

Garrett Gordon.

In Pinto-American Division action Saturday - Mariners’ Wyatt Muller

belted two home runs bringing around five runners.

Jake Prater and Cole Robbins also contributed with a steady stream of

hits.

Defensive gems by Chase Whiting, Blake Pender and Riley Peterson

produced several outs for the Mariners.

Rangers’ fielders Steven Duhoux, Nick La Gandeur and Nicolas Sargeant

all caught fly balls that turned into double plays, catching the

Mariners’ baserunners by surprise.
