Boys swimming: CdM, Eagles shine

IRVINE - Corona del Mar High senior Sherwin Kim qualified first in

the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and teammate Jimmy Strack did the same in

the 500 free to highlight CdM’s strong showing at Pacific Coast League

swim preliminaries Wednesday at University High.

Kim went 22.18 in the 50 and 48.94 in the 100, while Strack touched in

4:59.69. Strack also qualified second in the 100 free (49.29).

Other Sea Kings in the championship finals (top eight) are: Michael

March (third in the 200 free, 1:55.55); Marcello Pantuliano (third in the

100 breaststroke, 1:08.51); Bobby Messenger (fifth in the 100 butterfly,

59.86); Brian Buhagiar (sixth in the 500 free, 5:26.42, and eighth in the

100 backstroke, 1:04.87); Kevin Ament (seventh in the 100 fly, 1:02.94);

Robert Fries (eighth in the breaststroke, 1:09.83); Matt Meyer (eighth in

the 50 free, 23.44); and the 200 individual medley trio of John Money,

Fries and Amant, sixth-eighth, respectively).

Estancia’s Frank Gamboa (seventh in the 500 free, 5:32.11) and Jess

Hellmich (eighth in the 100 fly, 1:02.98, a PR) will vie in the finals,

Friday at 1 p.m. also at Uni.

Consolation finalists include CdM’s Artie Dorr, Brandon Powers, Jason

DiRocco, Tom Harper, John Mann, Ali Kattan, Travis Hersh and Tyler

Brundage, as well as Estancia’s Hellmich, David Silva and Paul Collier.
