Letter to the Editor -- Mildred Litke

Greenlight will surely be the salvation of Newport Beach. Finally, we

have found a way to take back our city from the hands of the developers.

If this has been accomplished with the help of some of our older

citizens, we owe them a vote of thanks. It proves how unselfish they

really are, since they may not even be around to reap the benefits for

which they now fight.

But, their long range vision for Newport Beach will be gratefully

enjoyed by future generations who will surely have the sense of gratitude

sorely lacking in some of our present letter writers and council members.

Age is a propaganda issue being raised by some who have a very

insidious ax to grind. They try to mask their greed and lack of concern

for traffic and overdevelopment by pointing their fingers at “older,

wealthy obstructionists.”

Indeed, Mayor Tod Ridgeway, the founder of this ridiculous notion,

falls well within the AARP definition of senior himself (“Mayor’s speech

draws harsh reaction,” Feb. 2).

Don’t denigrate our senior population; instead hope that you

eventually fall within this ever expanding segment of America’s

population.

Remember, with age comes wisdom. Aging is something we all hope to

experience, but only the lucky will. And so next time you politicos run,

perhaps you should remember that senior citizens have the highest voter

turnout of any group.
