Columbia University has announced the autumn 2001 honorees for its

dean’s list at its two undergraduate schools, Columbia College and the Fu

Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. Sarah Ray of Corona

del Mar, Katrina Kaufman of Newport Coast, and Harmony Davis and Courtney

Ryan of Newport Beach were among the few selected from the Orange County

area. Those students selected must have at least a 3.33 grade-point

average. Columbia is among the nation’s eight Ivy League institutions and

is a very prestigious research universities. . . . Orange Coast College

has recognized more than 140 students for varying academic achievements.

The social science honorary society, Phi Alpha Mu, recognized students

for outstanding scholarship who have maintained a grade-point average of

3.5 or better in social science courses and a 3.0 or better average. Of

the 76 students recognized, the students from Costa Mesa include

Alejandra Amador, Amy C. Angelo, Greg M. Brent, Raage M. Bullaleh, Gayle

D. Callaway, Amalia D. Cardenas, Kirby M. Fopma, Jane T. Graves, Yuka

Hasegawa, Diana C. Jacob, Kimberly L. Kuhn, Tim Matthies, Juliana Ocon,

Mikiko Okamoto, Edson C. Rodriguez, Satomi Takaoka and Diana

Vallera-Rickerson. The students from Newport Beach include Paul A.

Alexander, Douglas F. McDaniel, Vanessa R. Moore, Justin R. Rich and

Leanne M. Salanga. In addition, OCC also recognized 65 student athletes

who qualified for the athletic honor roll. Those student athletes

completed a minimum of 12 academic units and maintained a grade-point

average of 3.0 or higher during the season of their sport. Those from

Costa Mesa include Lauren Cassity, Nancy Hatsushi, Daylyn Kelley, Mark

Meyers, Casey Peterson, Greg Worthing, Vanessa Johnson, Katja Muller,

Mitch Probert, Lindsay Smoot, Travis Trimble and Fernanda Velasco. Those

from Newport Beach include Lili Yvette Lopez and Natalie St. Andre. . . .

Richard Chao of Newport Beach will receive an honorary professional

degree from the metallurgical engineering department from University of

Missouri-Rolla in Rolla, Miss., during the university’s spring

commencement ceremonies May 18. Chao is one of 13 recipients of honorary

professional degrees from the university. Chao is a senior principal

engineer and scientist at Boeing Space Systems Co. He received his

master’s degree from Missouri-Rolla in metallurgical engineering and

engineering management in 1971 and 1975, respectively. Chao has worked in

the aerospace metallurgical engineering field since 1972 and for

McDonnell Douglas-Boeing Space Systems Co. for 20 years. His work has

primarily involved the development and application of lightweight,

high-strength aluminum alloys, which contributed to production and

development programs for the Delta 2, 3 and 4 rockets, the International

Space Station, and the F-5, F-15, F-17 and F-18 aircraft. Chao endowed a

scholarship-fellowship fund in the metallurgical engineering department

and is providing a room for the new student center at Missouri-Rolla.
