The Rotary International-sponsored Group Study Exchange Team from

District 1100, the Herefordshire area of England, has spent the last

three days visiting Newport Beach and Costa Mesa while being hosted by

members of the Rotary Club of Newport Balboa. The team is led by Rotarian

Malcom Richard from Rotary Club of Cheltenham Cleeve Vale, England. The

four team members are required to be non-Rotarians who are interested in

spending 30 days in District 5320, which includes Orange and southern Los

Angeles counties, to learn about the American way of life, as well as

their profession or vocation.

Team members include Nigel Tinsley-Such, a police inspector with the

Avon and Somerset Constabulary with administrative duties as the firearms

training officer for a department with 3,000 officers. He spent part of

Wednesday afternoon visiting Sgt. Steve Shulman at the Newport Beach

Police Department and was back on Thursday for a ride-along in a patrol

car, as well as in the police helicopter.

Sharon Barnard, from Cloucester, England, is a care manager in a

residential home for autistic children. She toured Costa Mesa’s Fairview

facility, thanks to Sue Haddock and Dawn Marie Lemonds.

Marion Maloney, from Bristol, England, is a European Union

international relations advisor to the Environment Agency and was hosted

by Newport Beach City Councilwoman and Southern California Air Quality

Board Chairwoman Norma Glover. Glover gave Marion a tour of air-quality

facilities and programs.

Finally, Elizabeth Twose, who is from Bristol, England, is an

accountant with Lloyds-TSB Bank who experienced a Microsoft Training

Center.

Later Wednesday afternoon, the group toured he Irvine Co. Exhibit

Center, thanks to the arrangements made by Robins Leftwich, senior

director of community relations. Then it was to the dinner meeting of the

Newport-Balboa Rotary Club at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. More

visits were planned for Thursday and Friday, with a cruise of Newport

Harbor aboard Rick and Elaine Williams’ yacht.

While here, the visitors are being hosted by Rotarians Millard

MacAdam, Frank Anderson, Andy Campbell, Richard Oberreiter and Hunter

Cook before being handed off to another Rotary Club for another variety

of experiences. The team members will be back in the area from Friday to

May 19 as they attend the Rotary District Conference being held at the

Hilton in Costa Mesa. “It’s programs like the Group Study Exchange Team

that builds bridges of understanding between people,” said Elmer

Biggerstaff, club president.

SILVER ANCHORS: Some would call them community anchors,

someone you can call upon when you need help. They are Newport Beach Fire

Chief Tim Riley and restaurateur Clayton Shurley, the newest recipients

of the Silver Anchor Award given by the Newport Beach Chamber of

Commerce. Both are unsung heroes in giving their time, talent and

treasure to a variety of community groups. They don’t do it for the

recognition. They do it because there is a need, and it feels good to

share when one can. Congratulations.

WORTH REPEATING: From the “Thought for the Day” provided by

Greg Kelley of the Newport-Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “The most

important trip you take in life is meeting people halfway.” -- Henry Boye
