HB Lightning saves best for last

The HB Lightning have set their trademark for the season: save the

best for last.

As has been their custom in recent weeks, the Lightning went down to

the wire in two games played this week as they outlasted the Terminators,

10-9, and then edged the Firecrackers, 4-3.

Kaila Kirkpatrick’s two-out, bases loaded single in the top of the

sixth inning spelled the difference in the game. It gave the Lightning

what appeared to be a seemingly safe, 10-6 advantage heading into the

bottom of the sixth.

Yet the Terminators struck back in their last at-bat, scoring three

runs. It took the insertion of Becca Sumner on the mound to preserve the

win, as she struck out the final batter after the Terminators had loaded

the bases down a single run.

It was all Keely Toma as the Lightning held off the Firecrackers.

Toma produced three hits, including two whopping home runs and she was

responsible for all four Lightning runs.

With the score knotted at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Lana

Rutkin walked and proceeded to steal both second and third base. Toma

followed and promptly lined a single to center field, scoring Rutkin with

the winning run.

Rachael Sumner had two hits and Taryn Devich added a single for the

Lightning. Devich and Becca Sumner shared pitching chores and limited the

Firecrackers to a single hit.

The duo struck out seven between them.
