The Huntington Beach Police Department is opening its doors to the

public on Saturday for the 2002 Police Appreciation Day Open House.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be held at police headquarters

at City Hall, at 2000 Main St.

During the day, the public will be invited on tours of the

department’s jail, crime lab and communications nerve center.

Several police divisions -- including the helicopter, canine, traffic,

beach detail and SWAT. units -- plan to set up various displays showing

their work.

Children who attend can meet McGruff the crime-fighting dog, Officer

Surf and have themselves fingerprinted.

Carl’s Jr. will provide drinks and refreshments for the event.

At 11 a.m., the 2002 American Youth Character Awards will be presented

in the City Council chambers. These awards honor children and young

adults who have distinguished themselves for their ethics, dedication or

other ennobling qualities.

During the event, various city officers are scheduled to teach classes

on how to deal with violence, build self-esteem, manage stress and avoid

negative influences.
