HUNTINGTON BEACH UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT WRAP-UP

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board passed a series of resolutions related to the Nov. 5

election.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The board approved consolidating the school district’s election of

three of its members with Orange County. The names of candidates for the

three seats will now appear on the ballot with other local, county and

state elections.

Bonnie Castrey, who has held a seat on the board since November of

1985, is up for reelection.

Board members Sallie Dashiell and Matthew Harper, both elected in

November 1998, must run if they wish to retain their seats.

By using the same ballot as the county, the district would save money.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The board heard a string of public comments about its plan to trim

$3.87 million from the 2002-03 budget.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The board moved a step closer toward eliminating more than 30 jobs and

several district programs.

Members of the public and several individuals set to lose their

positions spoke out at the meeting urging the board not to adopt Supt.

Susan Roper’s recommendations.

Roper has said the cuts are necessary, since less state funding will

be available to school districts.

Under the current proposal, the district would eliminate five

full-time custodial jobs, two vice principals and a librarian. The summer

school program at two of the eight high schools and a program for

disabled students would also be eliminated.

WHAT THEY SAID

“When you start eliminating positions, people are going to show up to

tell you why they are valuable,” Board Member Michael Simons said.
