Newport Harbor Baseball Association: Seesaw game leans towards

NEWPORT BEACH - What else would you expect from a Dodger-Giant

rivalry than close, hard-fought affairs, even at the little league level?

That’s just what transpired last weekend in a Newport Harbor Baseball

Association Bronco Division baseball game the Giants pulled out over the

Dodgers, 10-9.

Myles Christian’s clutch single in the bottom of the seventh won the

game for the Giants, who scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Dodgers drew blood first, scoring two runs in the first, but the

Giants answered with four of their own in the bottom of the first to

lead, 4-2. The Dodgers tied the game in the second, but the Giants

regained the lead in the third, 6-4. The Dodgers battled back, scoring

one in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a 9-7 lead to the bottom

of the seventh.

Peter Kinney singled in two to put the Dodgers ahead in the fifth.

John Swift doubled three times, Holden Gray-Keough had two hits, an RBI

and scored a run, Trevor Davis, Spenser Venegas and Brandon Davis each

added a hit and scored a run for the Dodgers.

Danny Moskovits, who pitched three innings, striking out five, singled

and scored two runs, while R.J. D’Cruz added a single before leaving the

game after being hit by a pitch.

Christian Hoagland pitched three innings, allowing no earned runs for

the Dodgers. Garrett Morgan, Matt Waller and Travis Knalson also played

well in the field for the Dodgers.

For the Giants, Brock Schuler pitched two strong innings, facing six

batters, striking out four and added two hits. Drew Littlefair had two

hits and scored three times. Trey LaGrandeur added a base hit.

Peter Hapke pitched three innings, and scored two runs, while Justin

Faber scored two runs and Ian McEwan reached base twice. Clayton Baker

and Collin Dennis played well defensively for the Giants.

In other Bronco Division action:

* Yankees 6, Diamondbacks 4 - A two-out third inning rally spurred the

Yankees to victory over the D-backs.

The Yankees, held to five hits in the game, scored four runs in the

third, with key hits coming from Charley O’Desky (2 for 3, two RBIs) and

Dusty Campbell (2 for 3, two RBIs)

Yankee catcher Zack Gagnon caught six innings, stopping several

pitches in the dirt to keep D-back runners at third. Joseph Hone at

second and Jake Dawson at third helped preserve this game for the

Yankees. Ezra Quemuel had a base hit in two at-bats.

On the mound, the Yankees were led by Jerry Whitney (three innings,

two strikeouts), Jackson Massingill (two innings, three strikeouts),

O’Desky (one inning, one strikeout) and Campbell (one inning, three

strikeouts).

* Yankees 4, Reds 3 - Solid defense by Dusty Campbell at shortstop,

Joseph Hone at second base and Charly O’Desky at first helped the Yankees

hang on for the win.

The Yankees scored two runs in the first, one coming on a passed ball

and the other by a balk when a runner attempted to steal home. Cameron

Chase got the save, pitching the last two innings, striking out five, and

also starred at the plate going 3 for 3 with two singles and a double and

one RBI.

Zack Gagnon went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Ezra Quemuel finished 1 for 2

to lead the Yankees.

Yankee starting pitcher Jerry Whitney went three innings, striking out

two. Campbell went two innings in relief with one strikeout.

* Reds 15, Red Sox 5 - A nine-run sixth inning keyed the Reds’ win

over the Red Sox.

Nick Svendsen, who had seven strikeouts and one pick-off in three

innings, went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Reds.

Jeffrey Frum finished 2 for 3 with three runs scored; Timothy Regan went

1 for 2 with one RBI; Spencer Richley finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs;

Michael McKay went 1 for 2 with two RBIs; Ronnie Dunmore was 1 for 2 with

three runs scored; Stefan Brysha went 1 for 1 with an RBI and Wes Parks

went 1 for 2 for the Reds.

Troy Seeber threw three innings, striking out five for the Reds. Eric

Holland played well at first.

Garrett Gordon (3 for 3) hit a two-run home run for the Red Sox and

Colby Peterson went 3 for 3 to lead the Red Sox’ attack.

In Pinto National League play:

Jacob Swain, Nolan Mena, Logan Friend and Blake Bell each had two hits

for the Dodgers. Kent Willett, Brooks Westerveldt, Ross Schwarz, Kyle

Regan and Jake Barber all played solid defense.
