1. Shipshape. The privateer Lynx will arrive at the Newport jetty at 2
p.m. today accompanied by greeters to open the Freedom Weekend Festival,
celebrating America’s first defense of freedom in 1812, which will continue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Newport Harbor
Nautical Museum, 151 E. Coast Highway, Newport Beach. The weekend
festival will continue with music, display period armament, sword fights
and games from the early 1800s.
2. Not quite history. The Costa Mesa Historical Society will hold its
annual open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the society’s headquarters.
The event will consist of an array of one-day exhibits displaying old
sheet music, hats and irons in addition to the regular local history

3. Run and hide. The 25th annual Kring & Chung Newport Beach
Triathlon, the longest-running triathlon in U.S. history, will be held at
6:45 a.m. in the Back Bay near the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort. The
race consists of a half-mile swim in the Newport Back Bay, a 13-mile
bicycle ride and a three-mile run. More than 1,000 athletes are expected
