Quaid’s Sharks will open Fashion Island music series

Dennis Quaid and the Sharks will open Fashion Island’s 35th annual

Summer Concert Series on July 10 with a program of rock ‘n’ roll and

country soul, including covers of such classics as “Wild Thing,” “Gloria”

and “Great Balls of Fire.”

The series will run six weeks with concerts held on Wednesdays at

Bloomingdale’s Courtyard.

Other performers will include Ambrosia, John Ford Coley, Stephen

Bishop, Sheila E. and the E-Train, Pablo Cruise, Rod Piazza and the

Mighty Flyers, and the Dave Mason Band.

Show times for the free concerts are 6 p.m. Preferred seating will

cost $15.

SCR schedules changes for its 2002-03 season

South Coast Repertory recently announced that its 2002-03 season will

include two previously unpublicized works and one schedule change.

Horton Foote’s “The Carpetbagger’s Children” and a revival of Alan

Ayckbourn’s “Relatively Speaking” will join a season that includes world

premieres by Richard Greenberg and Lynn Nottage, as well as works by

Shakespeare and Charles Dickens.

The season will run Oct. 11 through June 29 with five shows on the

Segerstrom Stage, four on the Julianne Argyros Stage and two holiday

productions.

The schedule change involves Michael Healey’s “The Drawer Boy,” now to

be staged last on the Segerstrom stage May 30, 2003, to June 29, 2003.

“The Carpetbagger’s Children” will run on the Julianne Argyros Stage

Jan. 31 through Feb. 16, and “Relatively Speaking” will run in the same

theater March 21 through April 6.

Barclay to host festival of flamenco music, dance

The Irvine Barclay Theatre will present the New World Flamenco

Festival on Aug. 9 to Aug. 18. The 10 days of performances will offer

dance, music and songs from around the world to celebrate Spanish

flamenco traditions. This is the festival’s second year.

Feature performers and groups will include Compania Juana Amaya,

Yaelisa and Caminos Flamencos, and Compania Flamenco Andres Marin.

The festival will include a time for artists to share the secrets of

their trade.

Tickets are $28 to $38.
