NEWPORT BEACH - Newly appointed UCLA Athletic Director Dan

Guerrero, who helped turn around much of the UC Irvine athletic programs

as athletic director the past decade, hasn’t wasted any time throwing his

Bruins hat into the public ring.

Guerrero, still the athletic director at UCI until July 1, made a

surprise appearance at the dinner and awards program of the second annual

UCLA Orange County Golf Classic at Newport Beach Country Club recently.

“Having the chance to return to my alma mater and lead such a

prestigious athletic program are the reasons I embrace this opportunity,”

said Guerrero, during impromptu remarks.

Guerrero is a 1974 UCLA graduate and former standout second baseman on

the Bruins’ baseball team.

The event, expected to be a Newport Beach mainstay, raised more than

$18,000 for UCLA scholarships.

Low-gross winners were Larry Beasley, Dan Herber, Bill McCollum and

Scott Merrill; low-net winners were Dawn Franza, Tom Franza, Jeff Litten

and Mark Scatolini.

The UCLA Alumni Association, the UCLA Chancellor’s Associates, the

campus’ preeminent donor group, and the UCLA Club of Orange County all

sponsored the event. For details on next year’s event: (310) 794-4306 or
