Prep baseball: Cabico tops locals honored

Costa Mesa High senior Nick Cabico highlights nine local players

recognized on the coaches’ All-Pacific Coast League baseball team as

Co-Pitcher of the Year.

Cabico, a four-year varsity performer, shares the honor with

University senior Dan Warner.

University senior Matt Stone is the Player of the Year.

Cabico, a first-team all-league selection as a junior, is joined on

the first team by Corona del Mar juniors Nick Karpe and Nick Rhodes, as

well as Costa Mesa junior Nathan Hunter.

Estancia seniors Paul Flory and J.B. Goff, as well as Mesa senior

Michael McGuire, CdM senior Billy Eagle and CdM sophomore Josh Bradbury,

are second-team honorees.

In addition to his pitching prowess, Cabico was also a strong

offensive weapon for the Mustangs. He also played outfield.

Rhodes, a left-handed pitcher, was the ace of the staff for Coach John

Emme’s Sea Kings, who won a third-place tiebreaker with Mesa and Laguna

Beach to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division IV Playoffs.

Karpe, a transfer from Mater Dei, was the Sea Kings’ catcher, who led

the team with 29 RBIs.

Hunter wound up behind the plate for the Mustangs’ stretch drive and

was a consistently strong hitter for Coach Kirk Bauermeister’s squad.

Flory’s primary contribution came on the mound, while Goff was a

hustling outfielder for Coach C.K. Green’s Eagles.

Eagle, a two-time first-team all-league performer who shared league

MVP honors as a junior, led the Sea Kings in hitting, despite battling a

sprained elbow, which prohibited him from playing his familiar defensive

role in center field. He will play collegiately at UCLA.

Bradbury was a third baseman and pitcher for the Sea Kings, while

McGuire patrolled center field and had several big hits for the Mustangs.
