Knights put an end to Artists’ season

For the third year in a row, the quarterfinal round has ended a season

for the Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball program.

Although they didn’t play one of their better matches of the season,

the Artists did put up quite a fight last Friday night but fell in three

games to visiting Bishop Montgomery, 13-15, 11-15, 10-15, in a second

round CIF Southern Section Division IV contest.

Junior Matt Anderson led Laguna Beach with 18 kills, and Reid Anderson

contributed 13.

Coach Shawn Patchell said that the senior was the Artists’ player of

the match.

“Reid had a really great, all-around game,” Patchell said. “He passed

exceptionally well and led us in what turned out to be his final game for

us.”

Patchell also noted the play of senior defensive specialist James Wood

who was ill but, “played tough and passed well.”

Laguna Beach was its own worst enemy against the Knights (20-3) as the

Artists were guilty of numerous, unforced turnovers.

“That is not indicative of our team,” Patchell said of the turnovers.

“We just didn’t come to play and I think it’s a shame that we had to end

our season on a sour note.

“But, we did have a very good season. We improved as the season went

on and we finished in second place in one of the toughest leagues in

Southern California.”

The Artists ended their season with an overall record of 14-7.
