The original store, the Toy Shop, has been in the area for 40 years. In

The latest theme in bedding is the surf motif and, according to

Strouds, Dean Miller’s Surf Bedding is its best seller. Dean Miller

Hawaiian Island prints specializes in Hawaiian home furnishings, and the

bedding patterns range from Hawaiian hibiscus, surfboard designs, dancing

hula girls, tiki statues and woody cars. There are comforter covers,

throw blankets and pillows. The line was created by Doug C. Smith, who

started the company in a spare bedroom of his apartment on $10,000. “It’s

the perfect accent to your beach lifestyle,” says Doug C. Smith. “We

looked at the industry, and everything was so bland and similar. We just

wanted to add a little fun and bring some island accents into the home.

It just congers up warm visions of beautiful islands and tropical

paradises.” Strouds is in the Costa Mesa Courtyards at 1835 Newport Blvd.
