Feedback -- Ducks running afowl of island residents

The duck problem on the Grand Canal of Balboa Island is the result of

one woman who simply does not care about the health of the children who

swim in the canal nor the peace and quite in the middle of the night for

her neighbors and the well-being of the visitors who come to our island

(“Newport Beach trying to duck the law,” Tuesday).

I have witnessed her on several occasions step out of her house, throw

a hand full of food to the 20 to 30 ducks and pigeons sitting along the

sea wall squawking for food. She does this many times a day and somehow

thinks this makes her immune to the “bulk feeding” law. I say, fine her

or change the law to prohibit any feeding. The canal is becoming a fowl

embarrassment to the whole city.

Getting rid of the ducks will not solve the problem. This has been

tried before. There is a woman on Grand Canal that feeds them on a daily

basis. Until this is stopped, these or other ducks will return. I have

seen the police talking to her; why don’t they cite her?

I’ve noticed an improvement and hardly any duck feeding. Bayfronts

have put up “No Feeding” signs, which help. Ducks and birds go with the

territory; they will always be here.

I think the duck patrol should go after the one culprit on Grand Canal

attracting the ducks. I don’t think city funds should be spent for such a

never-ending problem. We are a tourist destination, like a park, and will

always have tourists and birds and ducks. With a concerted effort, we can

take care of this without government butting in.
