IRVINE - The bats finally came around for the Newport Harbor Bronco

Division B team as it won the final three games of the Irvine Memorial

Day Tournament held May 25.

Newport Harbor’s 19-hits for 12 runs in the final game was enough to

down the South Irvine B team, 12-3, in the afternoon game.

Jerry Whitney and Michael Helfrich both went 3 for 3, with two RBIs

each for Newport Harbor. Four players went 2 for 3 including Spenser

Smith, Cameron Chase, Michael Maddex (who hit an inside-the-park home run

in the team’s first tournament game) and Chase Behr, who came in to pitch

two innings, striking out four.

Earlier, Newport Harbor defeated Dana Points, 8-7.

Jason Massingill stood out at catcher and at third base, tagging out

two runners at home, and recording three putouts at third.

Justin Jones threw out a runner at third.

Behr (three RBIs) and Maddex (triple) led the hitting charge, each

going 3 for 3.

Newport Harbor exploded for a 14-run third inning en route to a 18-5

win over Irvine for the team’s first win.

Every Newport Harbor player had a hit and all but one had an RBI.

Massingill led the charge for Newport, going 3 for 3 with a double and

a home run, finishing with four RBIs. John Swift, Ronnie Dunmore and Behr

all went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, while Spencer Smith finished 2 for 3 with

a double and two RBIs.Ben Frazier finished 1 for 3 with one RBI, and

stopped two hardhit balls at shortstop to stymie an Irvine rally in the

third.

In Pinto Division play at the tournament:

The 8-year-olds of Newport Harbor had a rough go of it, losing all

four games over the weekend, but showed some promising signs.

Tommy Shaw, who had three singles, two walks, three runs scored and

three RBIs, pitched four innings and struck out 11 batters in weekend

play, while Brice Manning threw five innings and struck out four. Cole

Blower (two singles, two walks, three runs scored, one RBI), Ryan Davis

(two singles, three RBIs) and Ian Baugh (single, double, two runs scored

and one RBI) hit well for Newport Harbor.
