Members of the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor honored recipients of

the ACE award with a $500 check and a plaque to memorialize their

achievement. Introduced by member Bob Kinton were students Ronald

Hackett, Cole Whaley and Niki Kimbell from Monte Vista High School;

Michelle Baines from Back Bay High School; Melissa Blair from Corona del

Mar High School; Shannon Maddox from Costa Mesa High School and Jessica

Arias and Zureen Naaz from Estancia High School.

“We hope that some of these students will be back as role models in

the near future,” states Kinton.

On June 13, 2002, Newport Harbor High School football coach Jeff

Brinkley will present the Bill Wittman Memorial Award plaque and a check

to one of his graduating senior football players at the Exchange Club

luncheon help at the Nautical Museum.

IRRELEVANT WEEK: Irrelevant Week founder Paul Salata is out speaking

to service clubs as I.W. has added a new component this year, honoring a

service club member who doesn’t always get the credit for their donation

of time, talent and treasure to the community. Salata will be speaking on

June 6 to the Newport Beach Corona del Mar Kiwanis Club luncheon held at

the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club.

Salata was honored with “An American Tribute” last week for his

lifetime of philanthropic achievements at the Grove Theater in Anaheim

that was attended by more than 700 business, sports and community leaders

from Orange and Los Angeles counties. Daily Pilot publisher Tom Johnson,

sports editor Roger Carlson and I were there along with a hundred or so

Newport-Mesa folks (John and Carol Curcci, Peter and Ginny Ueberroth,

Richard and Susan Luehrs, Michael Stevens to name a few) to hear masters

of ceremony and Daily Pilot columnist Peter Buffa lead a very funny and

insightful “This is Your Life” tribute to Salata. It was a beautiful

evening, celebrating Salata’s life while raising funds for the Orange

County chapters of Goodwill Industries (Dan Rogers, chief executive of

Goodwill conceived the tribute idea) and the American Red Cross.

Back to Irrelevant Week: Defensive Tackle Ahmad Miller, drafted 261st

by the Houston Texans from the UNLV football team, will be honored during

I.W. 27, which begins with the Arrival Party at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June

17. The party is sponsored by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach

Chamber of Commerce and is will be held at the Newport Dunes Waterfront

Resort. Tickets are $10 per person and include food, a jazz band,

cheerleaders, gifts to Miller and a lot of laughs at Miller’s expense.

On Tuesday, June 18, UNLV coach John Robinson will be the special

guest at the All-Star Celebrity Sports Banquet to be held at the Newport

Beach Marriott Hotel at 6 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person. On Friday,

June 21, Miller’s day will include a beach party before venturing to Sing

Sing and the Crazy Horse in the Irvine Spectrum.

More information on Irrelevant Week can be obtained by calling (949)

263-0727. It is a week you will enjoy! See you there.

WORTH REPEATING -- From the “Thought for the Day” provided by Greg

Kelley of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council --”Appreciation is a

wonderful thing; it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as

well.” -- Voltaire
