Helping a friend in need

When the Del Taco Huntington Beach Pro/Junior Surf Series kicks off

its summer schedule this weekend at the Huntington Beach Pier it will

have a special meaning.

This weekend’s HB Surf Series will raise money to help Amber Scott, a

part-time Surf Series employee who has recently been diagnosed with

Hodgkins Disease.

The three-day event will begin Friday at the south side of the pier,

and will conclude with Sunday’s championship round competition.

“We’re hoping to start off summer a few weeks early,” said event

director, Seth Matson.

The Pro/Junior Division surfers and Macho Air Show contestants will

compete in first round heats on Friday and Sunday. The Pro/Junior

Division is for surfers 20 and under. The Macho Air Show Division is open

to all ages.

Amateur surfers will compete on Saturday and Sunday, with first round

competition in super grom and boys to take place on Saturday.

On Sunday, competition will continue with finals in super grom, boys’,

junior’s, men’s, masters, longboard and women’s divisions.

HB Surf Series will auction off a brand new, Channel Island surfboard

at Sunday’s awards ceremony to be held at Del Taco, on at Main Street and

Yorktown Avenue, across the street from Huntington Beach High School.

The money raised will go to Scott to help defray treatment costs,

Matson said.

“I urge everyone to please come out and support our loving friend in

these hard times,” Matson said of Scott, a wife and mother of three who

is expected to go through several tests and chemotherapy during the next

couple of weeks.

She already has been out of work for more than a month, he said.

“Donations will be taken all weekend at the event site,” Matson said.

“All proceeds from the raffle and auction will be added to the pot. To

all those who will come out, I thank you for your support.”
