Junior high track and field: TeWinkle, Corona del Mar shine

TeWinkle Middle School’s boys track and field athletes continue to

dominate when it counts.

And they did again this year during the Newport-Mesa Junior High

District Championships, placing first in the 5-foot-4-and-under, as well

as seventh- and eighth-grade categories, racking up 263 points in the

boys division, 126 more than second-place Corona del Mar.

The CdM girls ran away with the girls title, gaining 243 points with

Dwyer of Huntington Beach coming in second with 168 1/2.

TeWinkle had seven athletes finish first in eight events and had eight

competitors finish second in nine events. Eight TeWinkle boys finished

third, but it was a Harbor Day boy that broke two district records in the

eighth-grade division.

Zach Chandy ran the 100 meters in 11.5 and the 400 in 53.5 to set the

records.

TeWinkle’s most decorated athlete at these championships was Tony

Calderon, who won the 5-4 division 100 (12.7) and the 200 (26.5).

Calderon captured second in the long jump, leaping 13-10.

Harbor Day’s John Chapman was first in the long jump (15-11) and the

high jump, and was fourth in the 100 (13.1) in seventh-grade competition.

TeWinkle’s Danny Perez won the 1,600 (5:13) and was second in the 800

(2:22), while Adrian Jiminez placed first in the 800 (2:15) and second in

the 400 (56.2).

Also winning in the 5-4 division for TeWinkle was Darnell Crawford,

who was first in the 400 (1:03), third in the long jump (13-8) and sixth

in the 1,600 (5:42.48).

Trevor McDonald won the high jump (5-0) and was fifth in both the 800

(2:45) and shot put (30-3 1/2) for TeWinkle, while Chris Alvergue

captured first in the shot put (39-6 1/2). Jose Perez was second in the

800 (2:24), third in the 200 (27.6) and fourth in the long jump (13-5).

Five Harbor Day boys placed in the finals including Daniel Saldana,

who won the 800 (2:28) and was third in the 400 (1:01).

Harbor Day had 11 athletes place at the meet, among them Noelle

Bathon, who won the long jump (13-6 3/4) and was fifth in the 100 (13.7)

in eighth-grade girls competition.

TeWinkle’s boys relay teams finished first in the relays in all three

divisions. The 5-4-and-under team ran the relay in 53.3, the

seventh-grade team ran in 53.9 and the eighth-grade team clocked a 49.9.

TeWinkle had several second-place finishers, including Ricardo Perez,

who finished second in the 1,600 (5:31) and third in the 800 (2:35).

Blake Pinto was second in both the 1,600 (5:25) and the 800 (2:28.9) as

Jordan Garza finished second in the long jump (14-1). C.J. Buchanan was

second in the 1,600 (5:14).

Third-place finishers at the finals were: Lani Livingston in the 400

(1:08.2) and the shot put (26-3 1/2) in seventh-grade competition, and

Marisa Scott in the 100 (13.8) and the high jump (4-6), both from Harbor

Day.

Other third-place finishers at the meet included Angelo Vela in the

400 (1:04), Ian Castellanos in the high jump (4-6) and Pedro Duarte in

the 400 (57.1), all TeWinkle athletes.

Fourth-place finishers included Mike Morley in the long jump (12-8),

Dallas Kopp in the high jump (5-2) and Roberto Salguero in the 200

(28-1), all from TeWinkle.

Harbor Day’s Allison Gruber finished fourth in the 1,600 (5:56.33) and

sixth in the 800 (2:46.5).

Fifth-place finishers were Scott Braunsdorf in both the 1,600 (5:42)

and 400 (1:09), Matt Pisarski (28.1) in the 200, Enrique Vivar in the 400

(1:06) and Nick Juarez in the 200 (26.3), all TeWinkle athletes.

Allyson Gimple was fifth in the high jump (4-6), while Ben Sosin was

fifth (4-6) in the 5-4-and-under high jump, both from Harbor Day.

Sixth-place finishers included Tim Morley in the shot put (30-6) and

Evan McLain in the high jump (5-2), both from TeWinkle.

Paul Kawamura was sixth (15-10) in the eighth-grade long jump, and

Michael Coleman came in sixth in the 5-4 and under high jump (4-6), both

from Harbor Day.

The TeWinkle boys 5-4-and-under team earned the most points (121) out

of the three divisions.
