Newport Harbor Baseball Association: On to the show

NEWPORT BEACH - Third time’s the charm.

The Yankees won their third straight playoff game, 11-5, over the Reds

to advance to today’s Newport Harbor Baseball Association championship

game at 10 a.m. at Mariners Park.

The Yankees put the game out of reach with a six-run seventh,

highlighted by Jackson Massingill’s two-run home run. Massingill finished

the game going 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Also adding to the Yankees’ hitting charge were Jerry Whitney (1 for

3, two RBIs), who pitched three scoreless innings with six strikeouts an

no runs, Dusty Campbell (1 for 4, two RBIs), who pitched three innings

also striking out six, Cameron Chase (1 for 2), who pitched an inning

with one strikeout and one hit, Jake Dawson (1 for 3) and Joseph Hone

(RBI).

The Yankees have scored 39 runs in their last three games, and held

the Reds to three hits in this game.

Charley O’Desky, Zack Gagnon, Kyle Lawrence and Jake Dawson all made

sound defensive plays for the Yankees.

The Reds received solid pitching from Nick Svendsen (three innings,

seven strikeouts) and Troy Seeber (three innings, four strikeouts).

Seeber also had a double and scored a run.

Wes Parks, Ronnie Dunmore, Timothy Regan, Stefan Brysha, Jeffrey Frum,

Eric Holland, Michael McKay and Evan Fullerton all played solidly for the

Reds.

In other NHBA playoff action:

* Dodgers 8, Giants 2 - Danny Moskovits pitched three innings,

allowing only one hit while striking out three, and helped turn a double

play in the Dodger win.

Moskovits and R.J. D’Cruz (single, run scored) combined on the 3-6-3

double play to stop a Giant rally in the fourth.

The Dodgers scored consistently, with a run in the first and second

and two in the third to build a 4-2 lead.

Trevor Davis, Garrett Morgan and Travis Knalson all singled

consecutively in the Dodger second.

In the fourth, Christian Hoagland, who pitched three scoreless innings

retiring the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings on 14 pitches,

doubled followed by Holden Gray-Keough’s single to add two Dodger runs.

The Giants battled back in the fourth on a triple by Myles Christian

and a single by Justin Cotham to cut the Dodger lead to 4-2.

Brandon Davis, Spenser Venegas, who made a running catch in left, and

Matt Waller each helped the Dodger offense with hits.

Brock Schuler pitched three innings, and Justin Faber made a good

defensive play in center for the Giants. Ian McEwan added at hit for the

Giants and Glen Christensen played well at third for the Giants.

* Reds 5, Cubs 1 - Stellar glove work by the Reds in the seventh kept

the Yankees at-bay, and gave the Reds the win.

Spencer Richley made a diving catch for the first out. Then with the

bases loaded, Eric Holland made a great catch for the second out,

followed by Nick Svendsen’s snare of a line drive to end the game.

Svendsen also pitched three innings, striking out seven.

Michael McKay (1 for 2, two RBIs) drove in Ronnie Dunmore (2 for 3,

RBI) and Stefan Brysha (3 for 3, two RBIs) for the game-winning RBIs in

the third. Jeffrey Frum, who pitched one inning, went 2 for 3 with a run

scored to help on offense.

Troy Seeber pitched three innings and recorded four strikeouts.

Timothy Regan, Evan Fullerton and Wes Parks played solid defense for

the Reds.

Austin Carden, Michael Helfrich and Preston Davey pitched well for the

Cubs.

In other NHBA playoff action:

* Reds 12, Dodgers 3 - The Reds put the game out of reach with a

seven-run fifth inning to down the Dodgers.

Spencer Richley (three walks, three runs scored) and Nick Svendsen (3

for 3, three RBIs) ignited the Reds’ offense and also combined with Troy

Seeber to pitch six innings, striking out six Dodgers in the win.

Also contributing for the Reds on offense were Stefan Brysha (1 for 3,

run), Jeffrey Frum (1 for 1, RBI, two runs), Seeber (1 for 3, RBI, run)

and Wes Parks (1 for 2, run). Evan Fullerton had an RBI and Timothy Regan

went 1 for 3. Eric Holland and Michael McKay each scored one run.Ronnie

Dunmore threw out three runners attempting to steal.

R.J. D’Cruz went 2 for 3 and Danny Moskovits (2 for 2) played well

offensively for the Dodgers.

* Yankees 18, Braves 13 - The Braves rallied to score eight runs in

the bottom of the seventh to tie the first round playoff game at 12

before umpires stopped the game due to darkness.

The Yankees jumped out to score six runs in the top of the eighth to

pull away the next day.

Both teams scored at least one run in all but two innings.

Jackson Massingill led the Yankees offensively going 4 for 7 with four

singles and three RBIs. Dusty Campbell, who threw two innings with three

strikeouts, went 2 for 4 with two singles and two RBIs while Jerry

Whitney, who pitched three innings striking out four, finished 1 for 3

with two RBIs as Charley O’Desky went 1 for 5 with two RBIs.

Kyle Lawrence (one inning, one strikeout) and Cameron Chase (two

innings, one strikeout) also pitched for the Yankees.

* Yankees 10, Giants 4 - The Yankees didn’t need nearly as many runs

to defeat the Giants in a second round matchup later in the day, but

still managed to put 10 on the board in the win.

Charley O’Desky led the Yankees hitting charge with a two-out single

that scored two runs in the third and a two-out double in the fourth that

scored one more. O’Desky finished the day 4 for 4 with three singles, one

double and four RBIs.

Jerry Whitney, who pitched three innings with two strikeouts, and Kyle

Lawrence each went 1 for 3 with two RBIs, as Jake Dawson (1 for 1) and

Joseph Hope (RBI) also contributed on offense.

Dusty Campbell (three innings, four strikeouts) and Cameron Chase (one

inning, one strikeout) pitched for the Yankees.
