Track and field: One fine Day
SACRAMENTO - Costa Mesa High junior Sharon Day, who won the CIF
State Championship last week in the girls high jump, captured another
prestigious title Saturday night in the national Golden West Track and
Field Invitational at Sacramento State.
Day, who cleared a personal-best 5-feet-11 in the State Finals at
Cerritos College, went 5-10 to win the Golden West meet. She cleared 5-10
on her second attempt, but missed an attempt at 6-feet.
“Nobody else cleared 5-10. Everybody got out at 5-8,” said Day’s
father and coach, Eugene.
Sharon Day, still considering whether to compete in the Junior
Nationals at Stanford June 21-22, was not invited to the Golden West
Invitational last year.
The Golden West Invitational is in its 43rd year, and its past
includes athletes who have represented the United States in every Olympic
Games since 1964. The site, Sacramento State, was the same one used by
USA Track & Field for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2000.
