Looking back, 5 years ago this week:

Estancia High’s Jeff Perry wins by one stroke over Brea Olinda’s

Emerson Oh in the Southern California PGA Orange County All-Star Golf

Match at Newport Beach Country Club. Perry, playing for the South

All-Stars, shoots par on the 17th and 18th holes to overturn a one-hole

deficit, but the North defeats the South, 14-10, for its first victory in

nine years of competition. Newport Harbor’s Justin Shapiro finishes even

in his match against Brea’s Steve Bendt.Perry is a three-time All-Pacific

Coast League golfer and Shapiro is a three-time All-Sea View League

performer who ties for sixth in the CIF individual championship.

The girls 12-and-younger Orange Coast United Slammers conclude an

undefeated season in the South Coast Spring League Championship with a

5-1 victory over the Saddleback Valley Speed. Slammers’ captain and

sweeper Amy Burlingham credits the win to midfielders Sarah Hass, Taryn

Flamson, Tricia Orth, Kate Younglove and Elisha Morgan.

Alivia Mazura scores twice and adds an assist, with Flamson, Younglove

and Orth each scoring. Nikki Johnson adds an assist.

Newport’s Jeremiah Mann and Robert Ristau of Corona del Mar rowtheir

way to the national title in the men’s double at the U.S. Rowing National

Championships in Cincinnati. The duo, representing the Newport Aquatic

Center, goes on to win by a 14-second margin to claim NAC’s first

national championship. Newport Harbor’s Solange Rousset wins the silver

medal in the women’s single, finishing behind a sculler from Savannah,

Fla. She returns to Ohio to train for the junior national team to compete

at the World Championships in Belgium in the summer. Mann will row at

Harvard, as Ristau returns to the NAC team for his senior campaign.

The seventh-seeded Cubs win the Newport Beach Little League Majors

Division in upset fashion, defeating the No. 4-seeded Reds, 4-3, in extra

innings. The win is the Cubs’ second over the Reds in the

double-elimination tournament. Matt Warsaw, (2 for 3 with three RBIs) has

two doubles and a pair of RBIs prior to his at-bat in the seventh, when

he hits a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Keith Long for the

game-winning run.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week:

Newport Harbor’s Justin McIntee is named the Sea View League Male

Athlete of the Year, after starring in basketball and volleyball in his

senior year. The 6-foot-4 forward averages 23.6 points and 9.4 rebounds

per game. He is also the Sailor’s Athlete of the Year, first-team All-Sea

View League and second-team All-CIF Southern Section Division III. The

Sailors finish 11-15 in basketball.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Colin Bate wins the right to represent his

club in the U.S. Yacht Club’s Challenge by defeating six other teams from

NHYC by one-half point for the lone slot in the big boat (Catalina 37)

category. Bate is quick to mention his crew of Richard Lavelli, Dan

Thompson, Ward Mace, Gary Bechtel, Niel Jensen and Phil Thompson, who

helped him in the field of 49 from NHYC. Newport Beach boat builder Tom

Schock finishes second to Bate by the narrow margin.

The Costa Mesa Hibernians claim the Pacific Soccer League Cup at

Bellflower High on penalty kicks after tying DSV Danubia, 2-2, through

regulation and overtime. Down, 1-0, at halftime, the Hibernians tie the

match with a goal by Carl Dennison in the second half. Brendan Murphy

stakes Costa Mesa to a 2-1 advantage during overtime and John Ahearn

clinches the win with his final penalty kick. Hibernians’ goalkeeper

Gearoid O’Toole saves two Danubia penalty kicks to set up victory.

Newport Harbor High shot putters Tony Mancuso (boys) and Gina Heads

(girls) win their respective shot put titles at the National Scholastic

Track and Field Championships at Bermingham High in Van Nuys. Mancuso

uncorks a winning put of 61-7, more than two feet beyond his previous

best. Heads throws a career-best 42-2 1/2, beating her previous best by
